A zombie story has to move quickly when the film lasts five minutes or less. The Cary Theater’s eleventh annual Zombiepalooza brings that compact format to Downtown Cary Park’s Great Lawn on Friday, October 23, 2026, with free attendance.
The organizer’s detailed schedule places zombie-themed activities from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and the short-film competition at 8 p.m., subject to change. A children’s costume contest requires on-site registration, listed from 7 p.m., with limited places available first come, first served. Check the theater’s page for the latest timing rather than assuming the films start when the first activities begin.

This year’s filmmaking requirement asks main characters to play a sport, giving viewers a shared detail to watch for across different stories. Submissions are already closed. The announced rules seek family-friendly films without excessive gore, violence or language, although the films are unrated and the organizer advises viewer discretion.
Look for how each filmmaker establishes a character or a joke with very little time. Comparing those choices can be part of the enjoyment afterward. The theater says inclement weather would move festivities indoors to The Cary Theater, so verify the final location and visitor guidance before leaving for an outdoor evening.
